Driving Safety
Spend a few minutes before you start driving to use the following tips to plan ahead and you’ll save frustration when on the road.
- Plan your trips to consolidate several into one and travel in a logical order.
- Look well ahead and anticipate changes in the traffic flow.
- When approaching a red light, slow down early to save fuel, for both you and all the following vehicles. The cumulative saving is huge.
- Go with the flow of traffic, as long as it’s safe.
- Avoid heavy acceleration and heavy braking.
- Use the lane of least resistance, which is the lane that has the best flow, the best view, and the least risk.
- Avoid rush hour. If that’s not possible, car pool with others.
- When parking, back in or pull in and through parking spots.
- Avoid congested areas. Fuel is wasted in stop and go traffic or just by idling.
- Don’t idle for more than 30 seconds. Turn off the engine, unless you are at risk of collision.
- Leave your windows down or use your vents in slower traffic to reduce fuel consumption by air conditioning. Roll windows up during highway driving where open windows cause more drag.
